A small but busy facility seeing upwards of five million passengers a year, Larnaca International Airport (LCA) lies next to Larnaca Salt Lake and is situated just 5 km / 3 miles from the city centre. The airport provides a much-used gateway to the south and the south-west of the island of Cyprus, and is also used as a hub by travellers seeking passage between both Europe and also the Middle East.
Larnaca Airport is continuing to enjoy a period of growth and has recently started a major construction program, which is estimated to be finished by 2013 and will include a terminal extension and 500-metre / 1,640-foot lengthening of the runway. These improvements will increase the overall annual passenger capacity to more than nine million and herald a new age.

Larnaca International Airport has a very basic ground transport infrastructure, with buses comprising the only public transport service available, operated by Intercity. Taxis and hire cars provide an expensive, but more convenient alternative for travel to the city and beyond, being located at the airport's main entrance.
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) Information: History and Facilities
Following the closure of the region's Nicosia International Airport, after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Larnaca Airport was rapidly built and opened at the beginning of the following year. Although facilities were basic, the airport was deemed a success and soon began attracting charter flights, such as Cyprus Airways. In the following years, it became necessary to extend to runway, so that Larnaca Airport was able to accommodation large jet planes.
Major upgrades in 1998 saw massive changes at the airport, including a new control tower, terminal building and road network. The year of 2006 was an important year when further improvements were made at Larnaca Airport, including an expansion of the arrivals hall. This was part of an overall upgrade of both Larnaca Airport and Paphos Airport, at a total cost of more than €600 million.
The departures lounge and public concourse area is where the majority of shops and restaurants reside in Larnaca Airport, including duty-free stores. A business centre is available in the Cyprus Airways Sunjet Lounge, which can be also found in departures. For other passengers, the VIP Lounge does provide some business facilities.
